i've noticed that usually when someone who is very religious finds out that i am an atheist, they become very agitated even though i never actually said anything negative about their religion.. are they embarrassed?.
do they think i am condemning them?.
do they see me as a threat?.
It's because they've already judged you that you are going to Hell, and they are afraid you are going to drag them down with you by saying some magical words that might turn THEM into Athiests.
Also, you're an Athiest, why should they bother with you? Something about throwing Pearls to swine comes to their mind.
i was reading the post on "old radio" shows, and it brought to mind the old westerns that flooded the t.v.
stations back in the 50's.. i remember the first day we had a t.v.
installed, my sister and i were outside, and saw the "new" antenna on top of our roof, and ran in to watch the "new" black and white t.v., and enjoyed shows like milton berle, howdy doody, and others my memory forgot.
Well, I am only old enough to remember them in reruns. But, these shows are great. My favorite was the Rifleman.
I used to watch all of them. I remember the Lone Ranger as well with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels. (yes Kemo-sabe)
I love the classic days of TV. My favorite non western shows in no particular order
The Honeymooners. I must have seen the original 39 episodes at least 500 times each. I can never get tired of them. I even named one of my dogs Lulu after the classic sleepwalking episode.
I Love Lucy. - Yet, another show that is a classic. I loved the episode with Harpo and Lucy re-creating the classic "Mirror" scene.
And yes, I even like Leave it to Beaver. (Ward...weren't you too hard on the Beaver last night )
The best variety show was Sid Ceasar - Your Show of Shows.

i have been on the south beach diet for almost 6 weeks, and have lost 11 pounds.
i gained 2 during the week.................probably water weight, but was a bit discouraged, knowing i hadn't cheated.

Actually, the characters of Wallace Wimple and the Old Timer as well as a couple of the other characters are from the same voice actor.
(I think I'm starting to scare myself. I know way too much about this stuff!!)

That's what I thought at first. But, actually, Droopy Dog's voice was originally done by a voice actor named Bill Thompson.
I was just as surpised to find that Mel Blanc didn't do the voice of Elmer Fudd. It was done by an actor named Arthur Q Bryan who did the Elmer Fudd voice for Warner Brothers until 1960 when Mel Blanc took over the Elmer Voice.

I've found a lot of these shows on the Binary Newsgroups on Usenet such as Alt.binaries.sounds.radio.oldtime.highspeed, where lot's of people post these programs in MP3 Format. Each file is around 6 Meg each. I've built up quite a collection over the past few months. As I posted above, these shows are considered public domain, so there are no copywrite issues to worry about. What impresses me is the amount of todays "pop culture" which originated from Old Time Radio. Also, the voices characters from many of the cartoons I enjoyed as a kid started on the radio. The guy who did the Droopy Dog voice started on Fibber McGee as Wallace Wimple, the mild mannered chap who had a big old wife named "Sweety Face". There is a bit character on The Great Gildersleeve who sounds exactly like Elmer Fudd. The actor who did that part is the same actor who provided the voice for Elmer Fudd in the Warner Brothers Cartoons. I just think this is a wonderful form of entertainment. I make CD's from the MP3's and listen to them in the car. Makes car trips and commuting go so much faster.

when i used to attend the conventions, i loved distractions.
i always heard multiple "pssst" sounds from people opening cans of cott cola.
We used to have District conventions held at the Belmont Race Track in New York. I used to enjoy seeing the water trucks watering down the dirt and racking the dirt track while the convention was being held. Also, I used to enjoy watching the horse trainers work out the horses during the talks. Sure was better than listening to all the horse sh*t that was spewing from the platform.

There is nothing like the "theatre of the mind". It's amazing what you can visualize just by listening to these old radio shows. I find that while I am working, I can play these shows in the background and still get my work done. Just makes the day go so much faster. And, my eyes are not "glued" to the TV.
It's a shame that this form of entertainment is basically obsolete. There are some truly great episodes out there.
